A European sustainable agriculture company sought to expand their permanent crop production in South America and had a particular interest in growing sustainable cacao. To support this venture, Bonterra led the due diligence efforts, focusing on Ecuador and Peru. Over the course of three months, Bonterra visited cacao farms and processing facilities to understand their operations, interviewed cacao farmers and traders and built relationships with government officials, local partners, and industry experts.

We delivered our findings and recommendation to the client's Chairman, CEO, and CFO. Our recommendation for an investment in Peru included a detailed country review, cacao market analysis, and financial projection. Impressed by our thorough analysis, the client's CEO and Latin America Managing Director accompanied us on a due diligence trip to Peru to see farms and meet potential partners.

Because of our due diligence trip and analysis, the client approved the investment and has been successfully operated in Peru since 2013. We are advising a European impact investment manager on their new emerging markets Nature-based Solutions investment fund, helping refine the investment strategy and strengthen and due diligence pipline opportunities.

We are also advising an international NGO focused on promoting sustainable fiber production, developing their first impact investment strategy and identifying investment partners and opportunities that would make a meaningful impact on the environment and smallholder farmers.

In addition, we managed and led a blended-finance investment program aimed at investing in sustainable agriculture and forestry in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Our impact objective was to reduce tropical deforestation and promote sustainable land use practices.

We also conducted a thorough country-by-country review across multiple continents for a global sustainable agriculture company. Our goal was to help them develop a geographic expansion strategy that would align with their long-term financial and sustainability ambitions.

We assessed the investment case for reforestation of native hardwood species in Costa Rica and Panama on behalf of a corporate investor. Bonterra conducted extensive research and analysis, guided the client to evaluate multiple project developers and sites, and evaluated the feasibility and potential impact of such an investment.

In addition to our work in reforestation, we performed due diligence on sustainable fruit production companies in Ecuador and Colombia on behalf of a natural capital investment fund. We did on-site due diligence of the production facilities and farms, conducting interviews with key stakeholders and analyzing financial data to assess the risks and potential for a successful investment.

We were also engaged by a sustaianble real asset manager to develop an agriculture investment strategy that is regenerative, profitable and scalable. Bonterra conducted extensive analysis, led a due diligence trip to assess project managers and farms, and completed a comprehensive business plan and financial model for the client.

USA

We led and developed a financial plan for expanding a regenerative operation of pork, lamb, poultry, and beef in California. Bonterra worked closely with the client’s farm management team to project financial and production data, ensuring that the investment aligned with the client's financial and impact goals.

Furthermore, we evaluated sustainable agriculture investment opportunities in other crops such as regenerative grassfed beef, grape and other permanent crops in the US.

EUROPE

We developed bespoke market research and comprehensive business plans for blueberry and hazelnut productions in Eastern Europe, which enabled our client to become one of the first successful sustainable producers in the region.

In addition to our work in Eastern Europe, we evaluated regenerative silvopastoral investment opportunities in Spain, assessing the potential profitability and impact of the investments.

We evaluated direct investment opportunities in wild seafood SMEs that source from small-scale fishers in various emerging markets on behalf of an impact investment fund.

We also consulted international NGOs on the creation of investable impact investment strategies for wild fisheries and Marine Areas Beyond National Jurisdictions.

Additionally, we assessed the investment case of different sustainable aquaculture systems around the world on behalf of a corporate investor, with the goal to identify alternatives that would meet the opertional and sustainabiltiy criteria of the client.
